Developing and implementing health and safety programs
Developing disease prevention programs, such as smoking cessation, exercise, and healthy eating programs
Documenting all employee injuries and illnesses within the workplace
Observing and assessing the work environment for potential dangers and hazards
Treating injuries and illnesses for employees, including follow-ups and referrals
Overseeing and implementing emergency and disaster preparedness programs and planning
Serving as a gatekeeper for healthcare services, including rehabilitation and disability matters
Counselling employees on physical and mental health issues and guiding them toward community resources and/or employee assistance programs
Monitoring the health status of employees
When an employee claims that an illness or injury is related to his work, an occupational health nurse will also investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. For instance, they may look at an employee’s medical charts to determine whether or not the injury or illness could have been caused by a workplace hazard. These nurses may also perform drug and alcohol tests and investigate the causes of workplace accidents. This is often necessary for workman’s compensation and medical insurance claims
Occupational nurses will also screen new and prospective employees to ensure that they are capable of performing the duties required by their positions. This may include a physical examination, vision test, hearing test, and drug or alcohol screening
Provide primary and occupational health care. This may include tending to injuries, administering medication, and performing rehabilitation therapy after certain injuries,
Minimum requirements
National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) / Equivalent
Degree /Diploma in Occupational Health Nursing
Valid registration with SANC & HPCSA
Valid registration with SASOHN
Dispensing license
Audiometry & spirometer certificates (advantageous)
HIV &AIDS certificate
Diploma in Primary Health Care (advantageous)
Experience
5 Years’ experience in occupational health nursing
2 Years’ experience in Primary Health Care
2 years’ experience in wellness
