Introduction
The Shaft Systems Engineer is responsible for the design, maintenance, optimisation and reliability of all shaft-related engineering systems. This includes hoisting systems, shaft infrastructure, control and automation systems, and associated electrical and mechanical installations. The incumbent will develop and maintain engineering and automation documentation, ensure compliance with mine safety standards, and support operational reliability of shaft systems. The role also includes participation in commissioning, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of shaft control and monitoring systems. The position requires collaboration with engineering teams, artisans, and contractors to ensure safe and efficient shaft operations. The incumbent may be required to perform standby duties.
Job description

TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
Shaft Engineering Systems
  • Ensure safe and reliable operation of shaft hoisting systems and related infrastructure.
  • Monitor, maintain and optimise shaft control, automation and monitoring systems.
  • Develop and modify Functional Design Specifications (FDS) and Software Design Specifications (SDS) for shaft systems.
  • Ensure compliance with Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and relevant engineering standards.
  • Conduct regular system performance reviews and reliability assessments for shaft equipment.
Automation and Control Systems
  • Develop and maintain process control software using Step 7, TIA Portal or equivalent automation platforms.
  • Develop and maintain SCADA applications for shaft control systems.
  • Maintain and upgrade Operational Technology (OT) networks used in shaft systems.
  • Ensure proper configuration and maintenance of PLC, HMI and DCS control systems associated with shaft operations.
  • Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT).
Maintenance and System Support
  • Provide technical support for hoisting equipment, shaft signalling and safety systems.
  • Work with electricians, instrumentation technicians and mechanical artisans during installation, commissioning and troubleshooting.
  • Conduct field I/O verification and system diagnostics.
Projects and Commissioning
  • Participate in engineering projects related to shaft upgrades, modifications and expansions.
  • Assist with pre-commissioning, commissioning and handover of new shaft equipment and systems.
  • Provide technical input during engineering design and project planning phases.

Minimum requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (Qualification and Experience)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering / Electronic Engineering / Mechanical or relevant Diploma or Degree in C & I
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in mining engineering systems, preferably within shaft or hoisting environments.
  • Experience in industrial automation and process control systems.
  • Experience with PLC programming and SCADA development.
  • Experience in mining operations, maintenance and engineering projects.
  • Exposure to shaft hoisting systems or underground mining infrastructure will be advantageous
