Kalagadi Manganese Mine is situated in the town of Hotazel 70km from Kuruman, Northern Cape Province.
PURPOSE AND ROLE IN THE BUSINESS:
The position of the Occupational hygiene officer ensures the health and safety of the operations of employees (irrespective of whether they are contractors or Kalagadi Manganese employees) as they carry out their duties. Your primary duty and function is to assist management to ensure that the working environment in your area of responsibility is safe and healthy as far as reasonably practicable.
The Occupational hygiene officer reports functionally to the Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene Superintendent.
Job description
Key Responsibilities:
- The Occupational hygiene officer carries the responsibility to execute the planned Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene programmes.
- The position entails the implementation of a pro-active approach to Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene issues in the workplace and requires effective coordination.
- Monitor air quality (e.g., oxygen, CO₂, methane, and dust levels) using appropriate instruments
- The incumbent is responsible for monitoring functions on project management issues, and quality Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene conditions to support the operation to achieve its objectives and goals.
- Does risk assessment and planning, thus ensuring alignment with the production plan of the operation.
- Monthly operational planning of the job is done and coordinated daily with his/her supervisor and co-workers.
- Organising and controlling is done in accordance with other stakeholders e.g., other Disciplines.
- He/she coordinates with co-workers and creates a work environment in which they can perform to their full potential.
- He/she performs a supervisory function and ensures the cohesiveness of the team. Involved with the coaching, training, and development of junior staff.
- The incumbent executes a larger variety of activities (including the implementation of agreed upon action plans) and works to strict requirements.
- He/she is responsible for his/her own safety as well as for others according to the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- To utilize his/her skills and knowledge and ensure the application, by his/her team, of Ventilation Engineering management systems, processes, policies, and resources provided, to meet the short and medium term demands so that the company remains competitive.
- Takes cognisance of applicable legislation and best practice principles with the goal and aim to perform the daily Ventilation Engineering activities of the operation in a responsible manner with quality and quantity of work as priority.

- Respond to emergency situations involving ventilation failures or gas leaks.
Minimum requirements
Qualifications
- National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) with Maths and Science
- National Diploma or Degree in Mine Environmental Control or Mining Engineering
- Chamber of Mines Intermediate Certificate in Mine Environmental Control
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in Mining Ventilation and Occupational Hygienist
- 3 year working experience as a Ventilation and Occupation Hygiene
- Experience in the implementation and maintenance of Underground Ventilation Management Systems
- Professional registration (MVSSA)
- Experience in Environmental Management
- Experience in Occupational Hygiene
- Experience as a Fire Marshall
- Supervisory qualification and/or experience

Other Requirements
- Clear understanding of Environmental Legislation
- General administration and organization skills
- Risk Assessment Level 3
- ISO 9001, 14001 and ISO 45001 Implementation & Auditors certificates would be an advantage
- Experience as an auditor for ISO 9001/1400/45000/SANS 16001 would be an added advantage
- Environmental Management for Environmental Managers course
- Well-conversant with underground mining culture and related safety standard (board and pillar) will be an added advantage
- Incident Investigation Process
- Must have a valid Code 08 driver’s licence
